A group of Indian astronomers from the prestigious IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research ) along with IUCAA (Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics) have able to successfully discover a whole new cluster of galaxies and have named it after Indian goddess of knowledge and wisdom, Saraswati. This supercluster is located in the direction of Pisces constellation in a distance about 400 light years away from earth.
According to the astronomers from Pune based Institute IUCAA, these are one the largest cluster of galaxies ever discovered by them. It spans over a distance of 600 million light years and still expanding. Astronomers suggested that the observable part of Saraswati supercluster must have formed near about when the universe is just 10 billion years old. It is speculated have a mass equivalent to 20 million billion suns.
In case you’re wondering what is a supercluster, It is a large collection of smaller galaxies grouped together by the self-sustaining gravity of nearby galaxies. It is one of the largest known structures of visible cosmos ever discovered by us.
After their huge success, their recent discovery will be published in The Astrophysical journal, which is one of the most leading journals of the American Astronomical Society.
“We were very surprised to spot this giant wall-like supercluster of galaxies, visible in a large spectroscopic survey of distant galaxies, known as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This supercluster is clearly embedded in a large network of cosmic filaments traced by clusters and large voids,” says Joydeep, according to IUCAA who is the lead author/ researcher in the discovery of Saraswati supercluster. According to him, a very few stable supercluster have been discovered in the past. And among them ‘Shapley Concentration’, unlike Saraswati supercluster, is located in our nearby galaxy.
Well, astronomers across the world said that this discovery will certainly help them to shed some light on how distant large galaxies clusters are formed. It will also help them to determine the main role of dark energy, which is assumed to be the reason behind the ever increasing rate of expansion of the universe.
